The problem that seems to be clear is getting young minds to engage with science, technology and math, and we here are Business Class News cover great stories about STEM programs that are happening around the World, but as we found out from the President of the Back To Space Organization that their “critical mission” is to take STEM to the next level and they have coined the phrase “Exponential STEM” which has some unique features.
The biggest feature is that Back To Space uses very cool themes, one of them of course is Space, to engage with students and get them excited about the core fundamentals that will give them the skill sets for the future.
About the Back To Space Mission
Back To SpaceTM (BTS) was built for a critical mission – inspire the next generation to exponential growth in STEM. What began as the brainchild of Danielle Roosa, granddaughter of Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa, has evolved into a movement to honor American heroes, advance educational opportunities, and ignite the explorer in all of us.
To reach our trajectory, BTS is developing three key verticals that will serve as our launchpad:
- PRESERVE: Focusing on our aerospace legacy and the brave astronauts who sacrificed so much to make it possible, BTS is creating a TV show around the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. The limited mini-series will honor the past and serve to inspire a limitless future by combining entertainment and education. It’s more than a documentary; it’s not just another reality show . . . it’s a Docu-ality!
- PREPARE: Developing a platform for middle and high school students nationwide, BTS is engineering a STEM program that will provide interactive resources and connect kids with our team and astronauts. As our project grows, we hope to give our hardest-working students the opportunity to become a member of the crew!
- PROPEL: What important step can we take now to spark engagement and establish inclusive opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)? Reignite our space programs! BTS is propelling this initiative by putting astronauts back into space aboard a commercial capsule, and we want to turn their mission into an awe-inspiring, action-oriented educational tool for classrooms around the country.
A space module is being designed and built to hold eight crew members. Based on the goals of the project, the crew will consist of multiple Apollo astronauts, the host of the TV show (Danielle Roosa), and potentially multiple student STEM competition winners.
Over the course of the Back To Space effort, it became clear that the Apollo astronauts are interested in this effort being a “meaningful mission”. Back To Space took this to heart and visited with NASA as well as strategized with the astronauts. At this point, BTS has determined two main goals while at the edge of space.
- While the crew is at the edge of space, the Apollo astronauts will demonstrate LaserComm, a new NASA technology that will make high-speed optical data transmission possible. They will live stream (using LaserComm) into classrooms worldwide in the hopes to reinvigorate an interest in STEM
- Student participation. Students around the nation (and possibly the world) will engage in a STEM contest. Students will create a scientific experiment that will be performed while at the edge of space. The other experiments will be selected from the proposals made during the Fall 2018 school semester.
